According to a new study by scientists at the National Institutes of Health, CDC, UCLA and Princeton University in The New England Journal of Medicine, the virus of coronovirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) remains stable on aerosols and surfaces for several hours.

Scientists found that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) for up to three hours,

 1. For four hours on copper,

 2. Up to 24 hours on cardboard and

 3.  Can last up to two days on plastic.

4.  Can last up to three days on stainless steel.

According to research, people can acquire the virus through the air and after touching contaminated objects.

Study information was widely shared during the last two weeks, as researchers placed the content on a preprint server to quickly share data with their partners.

Scientists at the NIH from the Montana facility at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at Rocky Mountain Laboratories compare how SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV-1 affect which SARS causes. SARS-CoV-1, like its successor is now roaming around the world, emerged from China and in 2002 and 2003 infected more than 8,000 people. SARS-CoV-1 was erased by intensive contact tracing and case isolation measures and no cases have been detected. Since 2004. SARS-CoV-1 is the human coronovirus most commonly related to SARS-CoV-2. In stability studies the two viruses behave similarly, which unfortunately fails to explain why COVID-19 has become a very large outbreak.

The NIH (https://www.nih.gov/) study attempted to mimic the virus from an infected person on everyday surfaces in a home or hospital setting, such as through coughing or touching objects. The scientists then investigated how long the virus remained infectious on these surfaces.
